a message from the directorDear QAW Parents and Students, Welcome back to school! QAW faculty have set a clear vision for 2017-2018. Our prime initiative this year is to focus on the “whole child” addressing our students’ social emotional well being as well as their academic achievement. Our Primary Years and Middle Years International Baccalaureate programs are enriched with cultural and student centered experiences that provide authentic learning experience for our students. Students are challenged to think creatively, ask questions and find solutions, these skills that will help them become successful happy adults. We strongly believe that our students' happiness is a key factor in their success and achievement both personally and academically. Thus, we have set a goal to focus on student happiness and self esteem. Our teachers have spent a significant part of their training this year preparing for this school year with a primary focus on student well being and happiness. Our newly developed Ethics curriculum is another related and exciting initiatives that we will roll out this year. The development of the Ethics curriculum was led by Ms. Maryam al Hajri, QAW Principal who along with a group of QAW faculty and a parent representative completed the curriculum that will be implemented this year. The curriculum is made up of enquiry based units of study where students at all grade levels from preschool to grade 8 will enquire about and investigate a variety of ethical and moral situations. Activities will guide them to think deeply about each خلق to internalize it. We believe that this curriculum will impact our students personalities, character and will produce leaders who have high integrity, wisdom and strong people skills in addition to academic skills. We believe that we have an obligation to focus on moral and ethical integrity as a core topic that we teach in our program as our prophet SWS was also a teacher for ethics and morality ( إنما بعثت لأتمم مكارم الأخلاق) We believe that it's more important than teaching values such as leadership, caring and risk taking, etc..., we need to teach our students the deeper morality and ethics that values are built on. The name of the curriculum is: وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظِيم This is a taste of what’s new this year. We look forward to working closely with you to enhance your children’s experience at QAW. Bedriyah Itani Director PYP News
PYP teachers welcomed students this year with many different team building activities and student-centered learning experiences that focused on building a classroom environment that is safe and fun. The goal for the first couple of weeks (and even throughout the whole year) was for students and teachers to work together on building a classroom community where everyone feels welcome!
Our students will begin their units of inquiry soon, where they will focus on understanding different concepts and making meaning through research, collaboration and cooperative work. P3 stuents will be inquiring into how rules and routines help our school function. They will focus on students understanding their responsibility in creating a safe environment and the importance of having rules and routines. P4 students will be inquiring into the importance of making healthy choices, personal hygiene, our responsibility to take care of our bodies and how our choices an effect our bodies. KG students will be inquiring into communities and the role everyone plays in order to make a successful community work together. They will study cooperation and communication skills that connect us to a successful community. Grade 1 students will be reflecting on who they are and how their family beliefs and traditions shape the person they are. They will study how families can be different, even in the same society and how their role in school is connected to their family values. Grade 2 students will be inquiring into personality traits that cause someone to be considered a role model. They will read, research and study about different role models, what traits these role models had and their importance in the society that caused them to be a role model. Grade 3 students will be taking a journey through different cultures and how these cultures use art to express their cultures. They will focus on the different aspects of the cultures and make connections to their own culture as they take this journey. Grade 4 students will be studying about universal rights and how these different rights are important to humans. They will work together to research the different rights there are and the responsibility of different organizations to protect these rights as well as their responsibility as a member of the community to respect and protect these rights. Grade 5 students will be inquiring into self-identity and the influences of our families, traditions and experiences we have in shaping who we are. |

The PTA Team will meet to discuss further quality events that provide an invaluable experience for your children and ways to improve parental involvement in the school community. If you're interested to join or be involved in any way and are encouraged to do so, please email Zahra Lessak: [email protected] and provide me with: (1) your full name, (2) your child's full name and grade level and (3) if you have any expertise or skills that will be beneficial to help improve the students learning experiences.
