Digital Citizenship Requires Home and School Partnership
This month QAW partnered with parents to analyze our students’ use of social media and create a pathway for students to become safe and responsible digital citizens. We hosted a social media workshop and invited parents of the 5th grade cohort to attend. During our session we covered topics such as cyberbullying, cyber security, the importance of limiting screen time, privacy settings, and the impact social media can have on our wellbeing. Our decision to focus on our 5th grade students was based on empirical evidence that suggests that this age group is most at risk due to their inability to fully understand the connection between behaviors and consequences. Peer pressure and impulsivity may also play a role in the likelihood that this age group may bully or suffer from others' bullying in cyberspace. Our goal is to encourage parents to talk to their children about their social media use and connect with them in a way that promotes transparency and open communication.

Al Nafla Day at QAW
Al Nafla day is the middle day of Sha’aban, the 8th month of the Islamic year. It comes two weeks before Ramadan and it is based on the act of giving and sharing. Before COVID-19, families used to get together to prepare traditional food, and mothers arrange delicious welcoming platters while children watch on. The food is distributed among their neighbors and to the poor.
The date itself is marking the day that Muslims took Al Ka’aba in Holy Mecca officially as their destination for their prayers after they were heading towards Jerusalem in Palestine for a few years.
QAW students celebrated the day by wearing traditional clothes and sharing some food with their peers in the same class.

Literacy Week
Literacy Week in the Early Years was held from March 20th to 24th at QAW. The teachers provided fun activities around the school for the learners to enjoy. They participated in many engagements in the cluster in both English and Arabic such as fishing for letters, making a drawing, making letters with loose parts, and using chalk to write on a blackboard.
Ms. Joyce, the librarian, greeted us warmly when we went to visit the library. She read books in both languages. The learners were attentive listeners and they enjoyed engaging with Ms. Joyce.
It was fun to visit the auditorium to meet an author- our very own Ms. Samira! She read her book to the learners and we learned that we all have ideas in our minds that we can put down on paper and share with others. They were very engaged as well as attentive listeners.
Some learners also participated in a book swap with other classmates to understand the importance of recycling books!
They also really enjoyed reading outside under the sun. We found a shady spot on the grass and the learners shared their books with each other.
QAW Parents were highly involved during our literacy week! From supporting our learners in dressing up as their favorite word or as their favorite book character and also visiting our classes to read for the learners!
We thank you for your support and participation throughout the week! Keep up all the reading and writing fun at home!

Taking Action with Art
Our Grade 3 students decided to take action as a part of our unit - Sharing the Planet. We designed a mural that shows the ocean waves, and we have been using recycled bottle caps for our artwork so they do not end up in the ocean. This is a way that we can reuse plastic instead of throwing them into the trash.
Each Grade 3 class has contributed to this taking action project by bringing in bottle caps and also painting and gluing the bottle caps onto the mural. Our students support having a sustainable school and wider community.

Outstanding Work by Grade 5 in their PYP Exhibition!
The Exhibition is often thought of as a journey through the main elements of the Primary Years Program. It is an opportunity for the students to demonstrate the skills they have developed throughout their years in the PYP. Fortunately, this year with the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, students were able to work collectively to collaborate, communicate and present to the community. The students were able to conduct in-person interviews and visit public places such as museums and libraries to extend their research.
Our Grade 5 Exhibition unit “How We Express Ourselves” is a culmination of all the PYP units. Each student chose a passion or a significant issue to inquire into and was responsible for writing their own lines of inquiry and identifying key concepts, approaches to learning, and learner profiles to address throughout their inquiry journey. The students had to take some form of creative action by applying what they learned to their lives and community.
