Primary Principal Message
QAW Primary School wants to take the opportunity in this newsletter for November to express our gratitude for the support and flexibility of our families, staff, and students. We have undergone many changes since the beginning of the school year, and you have been so patient in responding to these changes and all of the surveys to implement the changes.
We also appreciate the support you have given to the entire QAW learning community in being highly responsible for letting us know of any health situations in your families so that the whole community can be protected. Your diligence and understanding when two week quarantines have been needed is to be admired.
We look forward to great success for our students and want you to know that even with shortened in class timing, our students are making excellent progress. The smaller class sizes have allowed us to have more teacher attention for each child. Our collaborative staff has been working hard to teach the core subjects with a sense of urgency and targeted support for each student.
At this time of year as we reflect on what we have done and what our next steps will be, I personally want to thank each of you for what you have done to support our learning community. You are an example to the world of how to make the best of situations when facing challenges. I am proud to work with all of you and will continue to serve you and your children throughout this year.

Secondary Principal Message
Another month in this exceptional school year, a time for us to explore ways to navigate the challenges imposed on us due to the pandemic. With the support of teachers, leaders and the participation of students we were able to create opportunities for innovative events that engage students in learning. The school worked with WISE & QFI on hosting a sustainability week where students engaged in multiple activities that relate to environmental awareness and responsibility towards it. As always our teachers worked tirelessly on the planning process and students showed a high level of engagement in the activities.
On an academic level, our grade 10 students along with grade 11 students are attending school for longer hours to ensure QAW meets the time demand required for the completion of the subject coursework. Teachers are always thinking of innovative strategies to deliver instruction to their students and ensure engagement within the classroom while maintaining safety measures. Our DP students are also engaged in a highly rigorous taught component of the programme while also receiving orientation on their college and career prospects. We are putting in place a support structure for our cohort’s first experience with college application.
As for our student affairs, our new dean of students, Mr. Andrew Dougharty, comes with a plethora of tools and experience with student support. This is a difficult time for students and we want to make sure that QAW students receive the necessary support needed for success.
As always, parental support of our processes, structure and constant open communication continues to build stronger ties among the QAW learning community.
Diploma Programme
Students in the Diploma Programme have started writing CAS Proposals. CAS is a core requirement of the IB Diploma Programme. The students participate in experiences and projects that provide opportunities for creativity, activity, and service. Several students have already started working on the CAS requirements. Some of the experiences and projects include: conducting a beach clean-up, a school beautification project, building a learning lab for MYP and PYP students, and learning a new skill like photography. We also have seven DP and two (MYP 5) students participate in this year's Empower Generations Consortium: For National Capacities in Healthcare and Life Sciences by the College of Health Sciences and the Biomedical Research Center. They had the opportunity to explore different areas within the medical field and meet experts during Q&A sessions.
Middle Years Programme
Students in MYP 5 (grade 10) have started working on their Personal Projects. The Personal Project is a mandatory component of the Middle Years Programme. It is a self-initiated and self-guided project based on a student’s interest. Some of the projects students are working on include: building a cat house, creating a vegan skincare line, and raising money for a charity. Once complete, students will hold an exhibition to showcase their projects. Mark your calendars for March 9, 2021 to join us!Students in all MYP years have completed their first term. Students have taken final term assessments and reports were sent home two weeks ago. As they move through the rest of the semester, they will work to improve upon their marks. Teachers are pleased with the progress students are making and look forward to helping students grow over the next few weeks.

Sustainability Initiative with WISE
QAW - Primary
Qatar Academy Al Wakra were honored to have Mr. Ali Bin Mohammed Bin Towar Al Kuwari, as our guest speaker at the WISE DLD Community Program 2020 on Al Wakra Sustainability. He enlightened our fourth, fifth and grade seven students by promoting social awareness, responsibility, and innovation towards sustainability as a social priority in Al-Wakra, Qatar. Furthermore, he highlighted the significance for environmental sustainability towards Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
The students found this experience beneficial, and inspiring as they gained a depth of knowledge about how they can be more socially aware, eco-minded and responsible around their home and community.
“I really enjoyed it when Mr. Ali was telling us about visiting the penguins, and it made me realize that we all need to think; protect our planet earth,” Mubarak Al Thani, Grade 4 student.
"I really liked it when he talked about the whale sharks and how he was surprised that there are a lot of them so close to Doha. I also couldn't believe that there are so many whale sharks close to us! I also found his world travel stories fascinating." - Almayasa Al Rayahi, Grade 4 student.
“Mr. Ali bin Towar shared his experience when he went to Antarctica on two occasions. During his second visit, he was surprised that half of the ice melted because of global warming and pollution. This will cause an increase in water and cause the sea level to rise in surrounding areas which would cause natural disasters such as flooding,” Ghalya Al Saadi, Grade 5 student.
“I really enjoyed and found it interesting when Mr. Ali Bin Towar explained to us the purpose of his adventures in Antarctica, and he inspired me to take care of the environment through sustainable actions,” Yousef Al Khater, Grade 7 student.
Qatar Academy Al Wakra students from grades 3, 4 and 5 participated and interacted in the WISE session ‘Crash Test World Screening’, whereby students explored sustainability in Qatar and New York City. The students learned similarities and differences in what sustainability means in Qatar and New York City, and how they can implement sustainable practices in their lives. Our special guest, Dr. Fahad Ibrahim from Agrico Agricultural Development (organic farm in Qatar) engaged with our students to share and discuss sustainable ways to source natural local foods. In addition, the students learned the names of beneficial vegetables they can grow and sustain, and the benefits this will provide to their community, and their country.
QAW - Secondary
Qatar foundation International along with WISE and The Global Nomads group collaborated with QAW for sustainability Week 2020. Throughout the week students took part in a number of workshops exploring sustainability initiatives both in Qatar and abroad.
Grade 7 Students were guided through a discussion spotlighting the importance of social responsibility towards sustainability in Qatar led by Ali Bin Towar Al Kuwari, a renowned media personality, cyclist and world traveller . Students also learnt about the use of plastic in different industries and its impact on the health of oceans and marine life.
Live from Nairobi, a representative from The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) shared a presentation with Grade 8 boys about becoming aware of the issues threatening the planet. Students expressed their ideas on the personal fulfilment that is achieved when taking responsibility for the planet’s well-being.
Finally, ending the week with creativity. 10 VCU Students virtually mentored grade 8 girls on repurposing materials. Some of the items made include;
1.Use of discarded mask strings to create drawstrings for
homemade grocery bags that can be made out of old clothes, bed sheets etc
2.Creating stationary kits out of cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, etc
3.Creating face shields out of plastic bottles
We look forward to working with WISE and QFI in next year's Qatar Sustainability Week!

Finally, ending the week with creativity. 10 VCU Students virtually mentored grade 8 girls on repurposing materials. Some of the items made include;
Guest Speakers in KG talking about their role in our school community
In our current Unit of inquiry 'How We Organize Ourselves' we were exploring the importance of different roles in our community. We had the pleasure of having visits from guest speakers such as Mrs. Suha and Mrs. Fatima Ibrahim. They talked in detail about the many roles they have in our school community and why they love their jobs so much. This helped the children to deepen their understanding of the central idea 'People work together to make a successful community'.

Preserving the environment is our responsibility!
Students of the fifth grade at Qatar Academy Al Wakra developed their skills, knowledge and self-confidence, to be influential and active citizens. After completing the unit (how the world works) about dealing with the natural world and the changes it goes through, the students decided to show the value of social responsibility and take practical steps to preserve the environment resources. So, a group of them went to the beach of Al-Wakra and collected and removed the waste left by the visitors of the beach. The student (Al-Anod Al Thani) invented the plastic waste recycling device in order to preserve the environment, while the student (Amna al-Abdullah) took advantage of the waste of food and made fertilizer and took advantage of it by placing it for seeds she planted, while some students also planted seeds of plants to support their environment.
We are very proud of our students and the sense of responsibility they enjoy!

I was walking down the beach one day when I saw someone in the distance walking back and forth from the beach to the water over and over again. As I got closer, I could see that she was picking up starfish from the beach and carrying them out to the water. There were hundreds of starfish scattered all over the beach because of a storm the night before. As I watched, someone else came up and stood near me. He looked at me and then looked at the woman carrying the starfish and said “You know you can’t save them all, don’t you? It doesn’t matter; there are too many of them.” The woman stopped and showed us the starfish she was holding gently in her hand. “It matters to this one.”
Every child matters at QAW, and it is an important part of our work to promote the importance of developing the unique potential in each and every member of our community both at home and at school. As the new Secondary School Dean of Students, I have the pleasure of working with extraordinary people. The Director, Principal, Vice Principal, Counselors, Coordinators, Teachers and Support Staff are all dedicated to the proposition that locked within each student is the potential to excel. Some locks may be more difficult to open than others, but by working together, combining our skills and experience and never giving up, we help to create an amazing future.
Current initiatives to help support this include college and career planning and preparation, community building, the consolidation of our approaches to best behavior from our students, and the coordination of the many different ways that our community members can contribute to the social emotional learning and well-being of our students, staff and parents.
Student attitudes towards academic engagement are strongly affected by what happens at home and in their social interactions with their peers. We hope to develop a strong relationship with parents and begin to offer online workshops and opportunities to meet face-to-face to discuss some of the challenges that are unique to being the parent of a teenager. Please feel free to contact me if you have suggestions or would like to contribute in some way.
I am looking forward to what we can accomplish together as a community. No doubt, it will be something wonderful, especially once we get to know one another.
Your child may not be a starfish, but if what I have seen and heard over my first two months at QAW is any indication, they are most definitely a star (and I bet you are, too).

Art Program in Secondary School
In visual Arts we encourage the conceptual thinking of our artists. Grade 11 students were given specific words to define according to their perspective of their meaning. Afterwards, they were asked to choose two of these words to reflect their meaning through a sketch. While grade 10 students reached about various art movements and chose one to adopt its style or technique and used it as a base to create their own artwork that reflects a global or personal topic, concept or issue
